SUS1501 Semester 1 2022
Assignment 7-746845

Step 1: Set the scene

According to the ecological footprint calculator provided above my results is as
followed :
– My Ecological footprint is 3.7 gha/global hectares
– My Carbon footprint is 6 tonnes (CO2 emission tonnes per year)
That gives me a total ecological footprint of 56% .
If everyone lived a similar lifestyle than me, we would need 2.3 earths! Let me
repeat that again, 2.3 EARTHS !!

Step 2: Write a comment about your footprint

Part A

1. You need to say something about your footprint based on what you have just
read in the "Sustainability?" section. How do you feel about this?

Looking back at the Sustainability section in SUS1501 and going through the study
material it frightens me that my ecological footprint is above the 1.8 ha per capita.
Sustainability define through the university of McGill is “ meeting our own needs
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.
This means that I am using more than my share and that I’m “compromising the
ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. My ecological footprint is
3.7 ha. Which I am shocked as I had always thought that I live a pretty sustainable
life. In order for me to truly live a sustainable life and not compromise those of the
future generation I will need to adjust my lifestyle so that my ecological footprint is
below the 1.8 ha per capita.

I am frightened knowing how my lifestyle choices have contributed to the
unsustainability problem, and I am even more worried about the amount of people
that don’t pay attention to their lifestyles choices and that are not educated on
what a negative impact it has on the earth and on the life of future generations.

Part B

In assignment 6 I reflected on the role that I need to play in order to help save the

, rhinos. Which was that I would not support any animal parks that does not
prioritize the safety of their animals. Parks that don’t care what the animals best
interest is. I mentioned that I believe Rhinos should be saved because they have
both intrinsic and instrumental value because they are a living thing and part of
our ecosystem. I had also explained why it the rhinos role in the ecosystem is so
important and that without protecting it, all else would start to fail. I said that I
would use my virtue of wisdom and justice to fight for these animal as raise
awareness to those that are not aware.

But now that I know my ecological footprint I also know that there is changes that I
need to make in my lifestyle in order for me to engage with nature and to live
sustainably. The three major categories that require change according to my
ecological footprint calculator is : food, transportation and housing.

– Living in America for the past 2 years I realized how big meat lovers South
Africans are. Well at least my family. I think I could live more sustainably by not
eating meat every day and try vegetarian or vegan options. I can also buy
more meats locally instead of buying already package meats at the
supermarket.
– I use my car every single day to get to work. I live to far to ride a bike or walk
to work. I can ask around to se if there is someone that lives in my area with
who I can do a ride share. I could also try to get a more environment friendly
car.
– I have a lot of ideas on how I can save electricity for example to invest in solar
panels, not use the washing machine unless needed, air dry clothes and not
use the dryer unless really needed. Turn off the geyser when its not used. Use
more energy efficient appliances.

Do you think that the answer might need some adjustment or are you still
happy that it is an accurate reflection on your arête?

I am happy with my answer in assignment 6 and I think it is an accurate reflection
of my arete, my arete was one of wisdom and justice and standing up for those
who need to be protected like the environment and each other. Although I do think
nobody is perfect and there is always room to perfect. I think by realizing my
ecological footprint and making changes in my lifestyle, I am trying to fight for the
future generation and also most importantly our planet earth. By reducing my
ecological footprint the loss of other species reduces and they have the chance to
survival and the right to live. Unfortunately it will take more than just my voice to
make an impact.
