, In this assignment I will explain the difficulties which may be experienced by individuals with
learning disabilities. I will then assess the impact of difficulties on individuals with learning
disabilities. Finally, I will analyse ways to overcome difficulties experienced by individuals
with learning disabilities. I am now going to explain the difficulties which individuals with
learning disabilities and specific learning difficulties may experience. The difficulties will
include communication, environmental, economic, attitudes, intellectual or cognitive, and
physical.
Case study 1- Chloe
Chloe is 23 and has an apprenticeship in media and arts. She has moved out into sheltered
accommodation to enable her to have some independence. She has down syndrome, and
this affects her in a variety of ways.

Case study 2- Ben
Ben is 17 and in college. He also has a part time job in Waitrose. He has autism and
dyspraxia which can affect him in a variety of ways. He experiences problems with
concentration, behavioural difficulties, and struggles with physical literacy, as a result of his
dyspraxia.

P3- Explain the difficulties which may be experienced by individuals with learning
disabilities
Communication difficulties
People with learning disabilities often find it difficult to use or understand facial expressions,
tone of voice, jokes, and sarcasm, as well as concepts that are explained vaguely.
Delayed language
Delayed language, which may first become apparent through missed milestones of
development, often occurs due to disabilities like cerebral palsy and down syndrome.
Milestone in early years centre around forming words, which is emphasised by Ferreiro
Peteiro et al. (2016) as they offer that “between 12 and 18 months, children begin to say
words”. Chloe struggled with this, missing key milestones such as forming words like mum
and dad.
M1- A person experiencing delayed language may experience intellectual difficulties due to
missing key milestones, which could lead them to fall behind their peers in education.
An individual with learning difficulties may have delayed language, so they could struggle to
explain what they need as their language has not progressed to the point where they can
express verbally. Also, an individual with learning disabilities, may struggle to understand
medical jargon crucial to their understanding of their difficulties. M1- This could impact Chloe
in a variety of ways, such as needing support in their day-to-day life. Tasks that may seem
simple, like going to the shop, become increasingly challenging due to their delay in speech
and understanding of language. Additionally, a lack of understanding in medical jargon
increases reliance and need for support from others to assist them, not only in initial
appointments but also in understanding how to administer medication or treatments. A
person experiencing delayed language may experience intellectual difficulties due to missing
key milestones, which could lead them to fall behind their peers in education.
