4A - Laboratory Techniques and their Application
Three sites: choose any
1. A pharmaceutical company
2. A company that produces plastic
3. A cosmetic company
Imagine you are going to visit one of these sites, as a part of a team
of the government health and safety (H&S) inspectors - eg. you
will visit a pharmaceutical company. Within the pharmaceutical
company you will visit the two sites mentioned below:
• Factory where product is mass produced/ manufactured
• The Research and development site of the pharmaceutical
company
Your brief is to write a report on the health and safety practices
carried out in the two departments mentioned above in the
pharmaceutical company. For this your report must include:
• How health and safety legislation is followed in both
organisation/departments
• The hazards present in both organisations
• How health and safety is managed in both organisations
• You will include the following points in your write up:
1. Describe the main activities of the organisation
2. Describe potential hazards in each department and how H&S is
used to manage hazards (link them)
3. Explain how H&S regulation in the department, improves H & S of
its employees and allows the company to comply with legislation
eg. How the company control hazardous substances and PPE
legislation and H&S policies.
4. Compare the health and safety measures taken by both organisation
in relation to legislation for the two departments you inspected:
- Factory where product is mass produced
- The Research and development site
5. Evaluates the measures taken by the company to ensure high
standards of H&S that comply with legislation
6. Benefits and constraints of following the systems (H&S
legislations) to the employees and the company (employers)
