The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree-prepared nurse must be an effective agent
of positive change in their care setting. Therefore, the American Association of Colleges of
Nursing (AACN) explains in the 2006 text titled The Essentials of Doctoral Education for
Advanced Nursing Practice, the DNP-prepared nurse must be able to evaluate research literature,
appraise evidence, and translate relevant data from diverse sources into evidence-based practices
(EBPs). My experience in the NR701 course has allowed me to hone skills and develop
knowledge related to EBP. This experience has successfully prepared me to meet the DNP
competencies related to EBP. In this reflection, I describe how the experience has enabled me to
meet the seven EBP competencies for a DNP-prepared nurse.

The course activities consistently required me to apply analytical approaches to evaluate
evidence in the context of EBP. When completing the discussions and assignments, for example,
I analyzed evidence from scholarly literature describing quantitative and qualitative research, as
well as other sources that I located or were a part of the readings. I gained useful experience
evaluating these sources for relevance, reliability, and validity, while also learning to justify my
assessments, which in turn helped me to think more critically about my criteria for evaluation.
Additionally, these activities required me to think about making these assessments in the context
of translation to practice, such as when constructing the Population, Intervention, Comparison,
Outcome, and Time (PICOT) evidence table where I evaluated different types of studies that had
been conducted on transitional care for congestive heart failure (CHF) inpatients. The skills that I
have built while engaging in these activities will serve as an excellent guide for conducting
