L3U2A3 SEPARATE TO
IDENTIFY

, Introduction:
As the new assistant in Chemcalequip, I need to show
how to separate and identify components in a mixture
using chromatographic techniques such as Thin-layer
chromatography or Paper chromatography in plant
pigments and paper chromatography in amino acids.
What is chromatography?
Chromatography is where the separation of the
components of a solution by color. All the different
methods of chromatography work in the same way. The
different components in their mixture have different
phase rates that separate the pigments. [1,2]
How does it work and what is it used for?
This works by separating the mixture through filter, this is
used where the components divide into layers as it goes
through the filter in which you’ll see the substance
present. [3]
Difference between TLC and paper chromatography
The mobile phase in TLC moves faster and evenly in
stationary phases that gives greater separation of the
components in the mixture than paper chromatography.
[1]
The stationary phase of Paper chromatography is paper
while the stationary phase of TLC is thin layer of
unreactive substance like silica. In the mobile phase for
Paper chromatography is aqueous liquid or non-aqueous
organic while in TLC is organic solvent. [1,4]
