Chapter 4:
‘Roaring noon’ To ‘I have enjoyed my lunch’ Recast this meeting from Wolfsheim’s
perspective.
Include:
 His thoughts about Nick
 His feelings about Gatsby
 His feelings about the cellar compared to the old metropole.

Transformation:
The cellar was a dim room, cut off from the surface above by shadows. It’s occupants
consisted of stage performers and juvenile criminals conversing amongst themselves,
holding glasses and bottles of all kinds of intoxicants. Wolfsheim found himself one of the
lost in the crowd, turning away from the table at which Gatsby and Nick Carraway sat. He
made his way to the back of the cellar where the lighting was a little darker and only a few
silhouettes could be seen sitting at the tables, a silhouette of stout figure lurking near the
doorway caught Wolfsheim’s attention in particular.

“Mangano?” Wolfsheim called out uncertainly as he approached the place where the figure
stood vaguely. The figure stepped into the light after hearing the familiar voice, exposing his
grey hair and round elderly face.
“Wolfsheim, what a surprise to see you in a place like this!” Mangano exclaimed, vigorously
shaking hands with Wolfsheim.
“I could say the same to you.” Wolfsheim replied, a grin on his face.
“Look at us two, not much space for us here anymore is there? We’re becoming old news
Wolfsheim.” Mangano stated solemnly as he took a sweeping look over the sea of young
people.
“Not like the old Metropole that’s for sure. You see that man down there?” Wolfsheim
pointed towards the crowd of people.
“The one in the white?” Mangano asked, his brows furrowed.
Wolfsheim nodded, “His name’s Gatsby. A good friend, Bootlegger, one of the finest in the
city.” Wolfsheim stated, earning a shrug from Mangano as if to say, ‘so what?’
“He brought me ‘ere today talking of a ‘business gonnegtion’ with this guy ‘ere with him. I
thought the guy was the ‘gonnegtion’ you know? So I start talkin’ and talkin’ but turns out
this just some up tight good for nothin’ idiot. So I made a right fool of myself.” Wolfsheim
explained, his features scrunching in confusion.
“Why bring him here if hes not here for nothing?” Mangano asked, also confused.
“I tink Gatsby wants some new men, kickin’ us out, he’s had enough of us old folks.”
Wolfsheim said bitterly.
“Yeah? What’s their connection then? I don’t like the guy he looks to clean, too proper, don’t
trust him.” Mangano huffed.
“Yeah, it don’t feel right. I told ‘im about Rosy, the fella had his jaw unhinged the whole time
as if he’d never heard of a gunshot before in his life.” Wolfsheim grinned, earning a laugh
from Mangano.
