, Unit 8 Assignment 2
Introduction
My name is Grant Kassalufu and I have been asked to write a case study for the local
newspaper (Guardian MK) on a large business’s recruitment and selection activities that has
250+ employees. To do this I will research 5 job roles and pick 1 to write about and apply for.
The business I will be authoring my report on is John Lewis and Partners. This is because I have
worked for the business in the recent past, therefore I know a fair amount about their
recruitment processes and the company. It is a large business and so I feel that I can write a
top-quality, in-depth case study on this business. It is also the business I used in the prequel
assignment to this one. John Lewis is a business based in the UK. It was founded in Oxford
Street, London, England, 1864, by John Lewis; the first store was opened in that year. It will
later become a mutual organization (John Lewis and partners) in 1925. They are a big business
with 80,900 UK employees and 85,500 employees worldwide. They have many subsidiaries,
most notably JL Properties and Waitrose. They sell a range of products from various categories
from food to clothes to home accessories.
Picking my Job Roles
There are several job roles that I can pick to apply for within John Lewis. For example, a
hospitality assistant, engineering shift manager, driver installer, operational resource section
manager, driver, mechanical technician, fabric engineer, operations manager, and reporting
manager. Despite all these options, the job role I am most likely to get is hospitality assistant,
which is why that is the role I will apply for in this assignment. As a student, this job role is one I
can balance with school studies and outside interests.
Portfolio
Job Description
A job Description gives candidates information about the job. It goes into detail by telling the
candidate exactly what they will be doing. It gives them as much information as possible so that
the candidate can easily decide whether they want to go through will the job. As shown in the
screenshot below, the job description that John Lewis provides clearly states what the primary
objective is for the candidates. It also goes further into exactly what the candidate will have to
do within the job. John Lewis also goes out of their way to show that they adhere to equal
opportunities (as shown in the second screenshot).

, Person Specification
A person specification goes into detail with the requirements needed to get the job. It is the
business’s way of pointing out the qualifications, skills, and qualities they want their ideal
employee to have. There are 2 sections of this: essential and desirable. As shown below, John
Lewis shows the potential applicants the required skills that they will need for the job as well as
the desired ones before candidates start the application process. This is good because it tells
candidates that do not have the skills that they might as well not apply.
