Lichen planus Lichen planus:
Condition that affects both the skin
and mucous membranes- the oral
mucosa is often involved.
Affects adults, females >males
Estimated to affect about 1% of
population.
Unknown aetiology
Skin lesions are flat, polygonal
papules which normally have an
associated pruritis
Affects surfaces:
Wrists
Legs
Abdomen
Genitalia
Back
Gingiva
Women who have vaginal, vulva and
gingival lichen planus are seemingly
more prone to erosive lichen planus.
Can be biopsied if unsure.
, If chronic can go through periods of
remission and exacerbation.
Treatment
If asymptomatic: keep under
supervision
If symptomatic: local
corticosteroids can be given
Pemphigus Autoimmune disorder affecting the
skin and mucous membranes.
vulgaris
Characterised by the formation of
vesiculobullous lesions.
Most common during middle age.
Oral involvement is common and will
see it in about 90% of patients at
one point.
Before therapies mortality rate 60 to
90%
Currently about 10% or less
Skin lesion start as vesicles and
bullae which rupture to leave raw
painful areas.
Nikolsky sign- production of bulla by
firm lateral pressure on healthy
looking skin.
Lupus Autoimmune connect tissue
erythematosus diseases made of three subsets:
