SYSTEM: hematological disorders
Disease Definition, including signs and Dental (medical history) considerations Dental implications and management
/Condition symptoms
ie associated drugs, or disease effects on Ie check INR score before treatment
the oral cavity
Anemia Is not a disease, but is often a
feature of disease.
Reduction in haemoglobin
concentration in the blood.
Female- <11.5 g/dl
Male- <13 g/dl
Decrease in either number or
efficiency erythrocytes or
haemoglobin.
Inability to transport oxygen properly.
Leads to hypoxia of tissues and
organs.
Caused by either impaired
production of cells or increased
destruction of cells.
Classification:
Classified based on the size
of red blood cells:
1. Microcytic
a. Smaller than normal
b. Causes include iron
deficiency and
thalassaemia
2. Macrocytic
, a. Larger than normal
b. Causes include
vitamin deficiency,
haemolysis, liver
disease.
3. Normocytic
a. Normal sized
b. Causes include
chronic diseases,
renal failure,
haemolysis
Symptoms of anaemia:
Central- fatigue, dizziness,
fainting
Eyes- yellow
Skin- paleness, coldness,
yellowing
Blood vessels- low blood
pressure
Heart- palpitations, rapid
heart rate, chest pain,
angina, heart attack.
Respiratory- shortness of
breathe
