Ethics comes from the Greek word ethos, which means customs, behaviours or habits. Therefore, ethics simply is the study of what it means to do the right thing. Moreover, it is a major branch of philosophy that deals with having the right behaviour and leading a good life.

Ethics and Principles

Let’s begin our lesson with some questions.

Do you download movies or music or even books from websites that you know are not
authorized?

Do you talk on your mobile phones while driving?

Or do you hate people who criticize you or your behaviour, even if it's for your own
good?

If the answer to all these questions is ‘yes’, does that make you a good person or a bad
person?

Well, although there is no absolute answer to that, we shall explore this issue a bit more
to gain some perspective on it in this lesson.

,(Slide 4)

Also, we are endlessly told by our parents, teachers, and elders that we should be good,
help others in need and all in all, live a virtuous life. But what does that mean?

Is it always following rules, listening to elders, or doing what you are told? Does that
make us good individuals?

Well, that may not always be the case.

, Greek philosopher Aristotle believed that a good man is the one who acts ethically
and derives his happiness from it.

So, let’s understand what he meant by that.
