Unit 1: Practice Brief – Mr & Mrs Q

Mrs Q moved to England in the late 1990s after the Bosnian War. She
witnessed terrible atrocities during the war and many of her friends and
family were killed by the Bosnian Serb forces. She met Mr Q not long
after moving to Britain. They were married and now have two teenage
children Maria and John. She has settled into life in Britain well on the
whole but occasionally has had to deal with people making comments
about her based on her accent and background. Once in a shop a man
shouted at her and said ‘Go home to where you came from’ which she
found extremely upsetting.

Mr Q works as a financial consultant to several big companies. One of
the bosses of these companies has asked Mr Q to help them to avoid
paying so much tax. Mr Q is concerned about this as he knows that tax
evasion is a crime, but he is also tempted by the financial benefits which
he could get. Recently he finds that he has been drinking more in the
evenings to relieve his stress and this is leading to arguments with his
wife Mrs Q. A few times he has really lost his temper and hit his wife.

Maria Q is 15 and having some friendship issues at school. Recently
some girls were spreading rumours about her and even sent her
messages on social media and the internet. They set up a fake profile on
Facebook to send messages too. She has started secretly drinking
alcohol from her dad’s drinks cabinet.

John Q is 17 and doing his A Levels. He knows that his parents are
having some problems and this has made him feel quite stressed. He
wants to save money for driving lessons but could not find a job so he
has started gambling on some internet gambling sites on which he lied
about his age and said he was 18.
