, Introduction

In this written document I would be discussing the types of expeditions with case
studies as examples and I will conclude by comparing and contrasting the various
types of expeditions. The types of expeditions I would be discussing is, individual or
solo, A group expedition, corporate, military etc. An expedition is when a group of
individuals begin an adventure either be on foot or in a vehicle with a particular
purpose I.e. (exploration, charity, or even by the military through the movement of
troops to battlefields.)

Individual or solo expedition.

An individual expedition is an expedition that is done by one individual even if they
have a support team to aid them. A solo expedition means an expedition done alone
for example hiking in the Broads national park. When a person wants to undertake in
a solo expedition, they usually have a group of people with them to make sure the
individual is safe behind the scenes without interfering with the task or journey.

An example of a solo or individual expedition is, Dame Ellen McArthur an English
sailor. Her aim was to circumnavigate the whole world and beat the world record of
solo-circumnavigation which was held by ‘‘Francis Joyon’’ which was day over
Ellen’s total duration. Her goal was to become the fastest person to travel around the
world.

The boat she used was an Australian-built trimaran called the B&Q which was 23
meters wide. The boat was an expensive one which was assembled within a 7-
month time frame, the boat had a cockpit which was filled with satellites, GPs,
heaters, food, water rations, computers, chart table, a life jacket, wetsuits, flare guns,
cell phone, flashlights, a cuddy where she used to sit and navigate. The boat was
equipped to an emergency beacon that send signal to the coast guards in case
something happened. Ellen McArthur suffered burns when she tried climb the mast
of the boat to repair. She also had to battle glaciers and icebergs through her
journey.
