AC 2.1 – Compare campaigns for change
Campaign Unlock
Change in: Policy
Background of campaign Unlock was set up to provide support for ex-offenders to get bank
accounts and jobs and to break the stigma around ex-offenders who
were being disadvantaged.
Methods used Website, Blog, Newsletter, Publishing Research, media appearances
to publicise the cause.
Success?
In 2005 the problem was prisoners were unable to get bank accounts.
In 2014 nearly 6,000 bank accounts had been opened for prisoners
before they were released. Prisoners who did not have a bank
account were unable to get jobs and receive benefits and Unlock
have helped them with this.
Comparison to other Both Unlock and Sarah’s Law have used the media to help the success
campaign - Sarah’s Law of their campaigns. Sarah’s Law had a lot of support from ‘News of
the World’ that used its front page to ‘name and shame’. Unlock have
used a variety of media including social media, radio and a blog.
Both Unlock and Sarah’s law have seen a lot of success due to their
campaigning efforts resulting in a change that has helped a large
number of people.
The founders of both campaigns had a direct experience that led to
the campaign being set up as they both had a first hand experience of
why the campaign was needed.
Campaigns set up due to different reasons – Sarah Payne was
kidnapped and murdered (Sarah’s Law), Ex-offenders wanted to help
those ‘going straight’ (Unlock).
Both campaigns wanted a change to happen but this was in different
areas, Sarah’s Law wanted a change in law so that it can be checked if
there are any convictions for child sex offences whereas unlock
wanted better opportunities for those with criminal convictions.
Their main target audience differs – Sarah’s Law is aimed at
protecting children whereas Unlock is aimed at protecting ex-
offenders.
