a. Why did reconstruction face such opposition from the south?

Reconstruction took place from 1865 to 1877. It was a time of social
and economical reconstruction due to the incredible ruin seen in the south with
derelict buildings, racial discrimination (Klu Kulx Klan) and weak state governments
with no money to pay for the reconstruction needed.

Good The southerners had been unopposed to the idea of the
reconstruction of buildings as it was William Sherman and his total war which caused
such destruction of buildings and the agriculture of the south. Total war was the
destruction of all land, crops or buildings in the unions path. Because of total war the
southern agrarian culture had been destroyed as most plantations had been left in
ruin and therefore, the south believed the north was responsible for renovation of the
land and the restoration of the southern economy which was based on agriculture
and trade with western Europe.

What the southerners were strongly against was the social reconstruction
which included racial reconstruction where carpet baggers were sent from the north
to help the free slaves, as well as this, the freedmen’s beuro was made for free
slaves to get an education or a job where they will be paid. The southerners were
against this as it contradicted everything they stood for and all they had been used to
for the past hundred years. And therefore, opposition included lynching and the
formation of the KKK which was an organised group who’s aim was to restore
slavery and kill or torture any “free slave” Good answer with relevant context

The south was also opposed of political reconstruction which included
the enforcement of new laws which allowed African Americans to vote and have
equal rights which, again contrasted what the southerners felt was their right and
freedom. Political reconstruction also dissolved any uprising of a new confederacy
and made sure the president of the United States was known as the only president.

To conclude, there were various factors which were used, by the
southerners, to oppose the process of reconstruction. However, eventually the south
won as reconstruction stopped in 1877.

An excellently structured essay - economic, social and political reconstrcution and how the
South viewed each one. I think your conclusion needs to sum this up. Basically say that on
the whole the South was opposed to reconstruction as it would raise black people up to the
level of white people - that is why social and political reconstruction was opposed. Without
social and political reconstruction black people could be kept subjugated.
