Intellectual development through the life stages
Birth and Infancy
0-3 years
From birth to 4 weeks the baby will glance at the parents face and mimic expressions. 1-3 months
the attention span will increase. The baby will make small noises, smile when they see their parents
face. Between 3-6 months the baby will begin to vocalise some sounds and mimic noises. At 6-9
months, the baby will respond with simple words, such as “mama” and “dadda.”
From 9-12 months, the baby will understand basic commands and understand the parents. At 18 –
36 months the child will be able to build a simple block tower when shown, can turn pages of books
and name objects, draw pictures, paint with large brush and use scissors with adults.
Childhood
4-9 years
At the age of 5 the child will enjoy lullaby’s, rhymes and vocabulary will increase. Able to remain at a
desk, follow teacher instructions and simple tasks. At 6 the child will be able to count up to 10,
understand shapes and mathematical skills. Understand their left from right.
At 6+ they will also begin to reason and argue with the use of words such as “why” and “because”.
