How am I doing?

Introduction

Learning aim is to review personal development of scientific skills for laboratory work.

D1 Personal responsibility

Understanding of the personal responsibilities that must be accepted for successful work in science.

 Work to appropriate standards and protocols.

During this assignment I learnt how to:

▫ To apply my knowledge of the equipment to an adequate use.
▫ To dispose of waste.
▫ Learnt the maintenance required for certain equipment.
▫ Correct use of glassware.
▫ Leanrt that if or not I have a certain equipment are authorised for me to handle.

I ensured that I followed the standard operating procedure, which are those procedures used to ensure that experiments
are performed according to a set standard.

 Application of safe working practices.

In the study place, we were ensured that we followed the health and safety at work guidelines to the dot, which was
introduced in 1974 and covers all aspects and areas of workplace.

The two sets of regulation we were educated about were:

▫ COSHH (control of substances hazardous of health). Which was developed for use in industry and
education.
▫ RIDDOR (reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences regulation). Were we had a legal
responsibility to report accident and near misses?

And yeah.

 Accept responsibility for the quality of own work.

The following list was thought to help us understand and remember the positive attitude expected of learners in
scientific investigations.

▫ Setting objectives to ensure responsibility.
▫ Read and research to expand understanding.
▫ Adopt a ‘yes’ attitude.
▫ Try to solve a problem before asking for help.
▫ Expect challenges and prepare for confrontation.
▫ Look for improvements to practise.
▫ Perform additional tasks to confirm finding.
