Title: Personal and professional relationships
Assessment Criteria: (AC 5.1–5.4)

How is a working relationship different from a personal relationship?

When you are working with babies and young children you will aim to achieve a
good working relationship with colleagues, parents, and external professionals
such as physiotherapists, health visitors, social workers, play therapists and more.

One of the ways a working relationship differs to a personal relationship are the
boundaries of policies and procedures and agreed ways of working. Contracts of
employment, codes of practice and even socially accepted ways of working with
colleagues.

Personal information about the child are usually kept confidential unless it is
absolutely necessary for others to know.

In working relationships, it is not necessarily important to like the person you are
working with so personal opinions and feelings are usually kept away from the
working environment, however, mutual respect is important to achieve a good
outcome.

Personal relationships are often based more on emotions and usually more
informal. Thoughts and feelings are shared with family or friends. Personal
relationships do not have the policies and procedures or codes of conduct to
guide them..

Information can be shared freely with friends and family without any restrictions.1
