The Basics:
Foreign Policy – government’s strategy in dealing
with other nations

Social Policy – government’s dealing with people
The Wars of the Roses lasted between 1455-1485
The two houses were York and Lancaster
The white rose represented York and the red rose represented
Lancaster
When combined this made the Tudor Rose
Henry VII ruled from 1485 until 1509
He gained the throne during the Battle of Bosworth
after Richard III was killed and thus defeated
Parliament – passes laws and taxes to help run the
country
King’s Council – the King’s advisors and administrators who helped
him run the country

Married to Elizabeth of York
Claim to the throne was via his mother, Lady
Margaret Beaufort which made it weak
From 1471 Henry spent 14 years in exile in

Why Henry was in a Good Position:
Won the Wars of the Roses
Male – seen as stronger
Earned his position – it was seen as though God wanted him to be
King (Catholic)
Good military commander
Royal blood (Lancastrian)
Why Henry was in a Bad Position:
Ruling the country after a war – rebellions and lots of hard work
England was low on money – mercenaries to pay soldiers
Came from Brittany – no support, didn’t know customers, there were
other claimants, unmarried with no heirs
