The mark scheme tells you whether the answer would actually score. It shows the points examiners credit, how marks are shared across a question, and the level of precision that is expected. Students who mark against the scheme learn the language of the exam, not just the content. A 3-STEP ROUTINE Step 1 - Attempt the paper first and keep this file closed until you are finished. Step 2 - Mark every question exactly as the scheme directs, adding up your marks honestly. Step 3 - Choose your three biggest mark losses, relearn them, and answer similar questions again later in the week. THIS FILE SUITS - A Level Geography students marking mocks and past-paper attempts - Teachers and tutors preparing feedback, model answers or marking sessions - Private and resit candidates studying without a teacher COMMON QUESTIONS Is this the question paper or the mark scheme? It is the mark scheme. The question paper is a separate document. Which paper and year is it for? 2026 Edexcel A Level Geography Paper 2. Can I use it to mark my own work? Yes. That is its main purpose. Attempt the paper first, then mark against this file. Has the content been edited? No. It is supplied as published, in PDF form. Do I need the question paper as well? ,General Marking Guidance

• All candidates must receive the same treatment. Examiners must mark the
first candidate in exactly the same way as they mark the last.
• Mark schemes should be applied positively. Candidates must be rewarded
for what they have shown they can do rather than penalised for omissions.
• Examiners should mark according to the mark scheme not according to their
perception of where the grade boundaries may lie.
• There is no ceiling on achievement. All marks on the mark scheme should be
used appropriately.
• All the marks on the mark scheme are designed to be awarded. Examiners
should always award full marks if deserved, i.e. if the answer matches the
mark scheme. Examiners should also be prepared to award zero marks if the
candidate’s response is not worthy of credit according to the mark scheme.
• Where some judgement is required, mark schemes will provide the principles
by which marks will be awarded and exemplification may be limited.
• When examiners are in doubt regarding the application of the mark scheme
to a candidate’s response, the team leader must be consulted.
• Crossed out work should be marked UNLESS the candidate has replaced it
with an alternative response.

, Explain one impact of the global shift on industrial regions in the developed world.
Question Mark
Answer
number
1(a) AO1 (4 marks)

Award 1 mark for one way in which the global shift of manufacturing has impacted
deindustrialised regions, with up to a further 3 marks for an explanation to a maximum of 4
marks.

For example:

• Many regions have experienced significant economic decline/ /deindustrialisation
(1), resulting in job losses/unemployment (1) leading to less disposable income (1)
creating a spiral of decline (1).
• The closure of factories has led to higher unemployment rates (1). Workers who
were previously employed in manufacturing often find it difficult to transition to
new industries (1), especially if they lack the necessary skills resulting in structural
unemployment (1). This means that are either forced to leave the area in search of
employment or take lower paid jobs in the area (1).
• Deindustrialised regions often face urban decay (1). Abandoned factories and
industrial sites can become derelict, leading to blight and a decline in property
values (1). This can also result in environmental issues, such as soil and water
contamination from old industrial materials (1). This is expense to remove by
remediation (1).
• The loss of manufacturing jobs can lead to various social challenges, including
increased poverty (1). Communities can struggle with these issues leading to rising
crime rates as people struggle to support their families (1). This is compounded by
a lack of government investment in these areas (1) resulting in areas experiencing
high levels of outward mobility (1).

If more than one way is given, credit the stronger one.

Accept any other appropriate response. (4)
