Investigating the Reaction Order of Calcium
Carbonate with Hydrochloric Acid
Objective
Todetermine the order of reaction with respect to hydrochloric acid (HCI) by measuring the rate of gas
evolution when calcium carbonate reacts with different concentrations of HCI.
Materials List
Calcium carbonate chips (small, uniform size) -~5g
Hydrochloric acid(HCI) - 0.5M and 1M (50 cm² each)
Gas syringe (100 cm³)
Conical flask (250 cm²)
Stopwatch
Burette clamp (to hold gas syringe)
Measuring cylinder (100 cm?)
Pipette (10 cm³)
Digital scale (for measuring calcium carbonate)
Safety goggles
Lab coat
Waste disposal cortainer (r used chemicals)
Data collection shect (u:tes eow)
Lab Procedure
1. Preparation:
Gather all materials and wear safety goggles and lab coats.
Measure 5g of calcium carbonate chips using the digital scale.
1. Set Up:
Secure the gas syringe to the burette clamp so that it is vertical and easy to read.
Connect the gas syringe to the conical flask using a delivery tube.
1. Performing the Experiment:
Add 10 cm³of 0.5M HClto the conical flask.
Quickly add the 5g of calcium carbonate chips to the flask and sealwith a stopper connectedto the
gas syringe.
Start the stopwatch immediately after adding calcium carbonate.
Record the volume of gas produced every 0 seconds for 5 minutes. Make sure to note the readings
on the gas syringe.
1. Repeat:
Clean the apparatus and repeat the experiment using 10 cm of 1M HCI, following the same
procedure.
