1 Poly(propene) is a commonly used plastic material.
It is made by the polymerisation of the alkene propene, CH3CH=CH2.
(a) There is a double bond between two carbon atoms in propene.
Complete and label the diagram below to show the position of the π and σ bonds that make up
the double bond.
C C

(b) Identify whether propene shows cis/trans isomerism and explain why it does or does not.

..................................................................................................................................................... [2]
(c) Draw the full structural formula for the repeating unit of poly(propene).
[2]
(d) Propene reacts with HBr to form two possible products.
Draw the skeletal formulae of these products in the boxes.

(e) A different alkene, but-1-ene, CH3CH2CH=CH2, reacts with HBr.
The major product of this reaction is 2-bromobutane, CH3CH2CHBrCH3.
In the first step of the mechanism of this reaction, an electrophile attacks the alkene.
A cation and an anion are formed.
Show this first step below.
Include ‘curly arrows’ and charges.
CH3 CH2 CH CH2
+ H Br
