Prior to our first meeting, you should try to make inroads into
understanding the topic, the tensions / uncertainty / issues
etc that exist in the law, and start to formulate a general
sense of what you might research in more detail and
eventually write about. I will expect you to come to your first
meeting ready to discuss your progress and demonstrate
some general understanding of the topic. We can then
discuss further and formulate an action plan for your more
detailed research

2nd t meeting – research
2nd – structure
3rd – submit draft. final supervision and shell give advice on
it.
Then you submit it.

Tips:
Must NOT be a social rant – political
Black letter law or procedure
Inequality act - discrim
Protected characteristic act – discrim
Have to speak about discrimination – look at both sides,
wether it is or not.
Narror range of discussion but going into detail with that. Not
too many little bits e.g. disparities.
Do race discrimination and sex discrimination. Don’t do too
many. Make it topics which would match together and allow
yourself to critically analyse. don’t do niche things. Current.
Not 10 15 years ago.
Broad convo but rein it in.
Do a lot of preliminary reading. Secondary sources is the
main source. Articles / newspapers / journals / news recently.
Then try to trace is back to the law in the essay.

Try to understand the word discrimination – don’t make
sweeping comments. What does the equality act say. When u
look at the grand scheme of things, was it really
discriminative?

, Highlight the themes you want to dicuss. Then work back to
primary sources then secondary. Lexus might be the best.
Then go back to the question.

Do conclusion and answer what u believe.

5k words – describe the law. Accurate and relevant law, put
in partiulcar sections / law. Talk about the act in relevant
details. And talk about it very clearly. Be specific. Prephieral
instead of talking about relevant matters.

Critically evaluate – pros and cons / engaging with particular
piece of law – challenges / inconstistencies in law. Any
loopholes / has it kept up with societies norms / expectations
of the reasonable person / relevant sources. What did the
courts say. Blogs / journals / books – primary and secondary.
Possible reforms – point out problems – how to make
situation better – original thought – own independent
thought. Pragmatic solutions? Definitely have that – as it’s
key.

Commercial awareness - Legal nature discussions. Some
social / policy discussion / economic may come into play too.
Avoid rant. Mature, evidence thought.

Professional relevance and originality – what would a
contemporary legal professional want to read? What can I
give them that would further there knowledge / why would
they bother? Include content in there which completely
changes there everyday understanding, say bold things to
change there state of knowledge for a expert. Interesting
reform ideas / don’t say things that have already been said
before. Present in professionally with tone, clear, coherent.
Easily digestible / accessible / absorbable.

Oscola reference – do it throughout the writing. Note each of
your research. Bibliography as well.
