Blood and Lymphatic vessels
-To gain an overview of:
Functional Anatomy of blood vessels
Functional Anatomy of lymphatic cells
Haemopoiesis
What is blood?
- Blood is a fluid that consists of formed elements and plasma
- It is produced by bone marrow, and the volume depends on body weight
What is blood plasma?
- Plasma is the fluid part of the blood. It is clear or straw- colored. It compromises 55% of
the total blood volume, and is mostly water and proteins
- its proteins include; albumin, globulin, fibrinogen and prothrombin
What is the function of blood?
- It provides a means of transportation
- Transporting gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide)
- Chemicals, such as those found in food, hormones and salts, removal of waste and
toxins
What are the ‘Formed Elements’ that are found in blood?
Etrythocytes are the red blood cells formed in the red bone marrow inside bones. They carry
oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Thrombocytes are platelets, about half the size of etrythocytes. They play an important role in
the clotting of blood.
Cytoplasmic fragments
No nucleus
Membrane Bound
Contain granules
Leukocytes are white blood cells, the body’s defence against pathogens (bacteria or virus).
They move the cell walls to areas of infection, ingesting and destroying pathogens
Type of Blood vessels
- Blood carried in closed systems of vessels that begins / ends at the heart
- There are three major types of blood vessels: Arteries, cappilaries and veins
