 magnetic field: A force field in which a
magnet, a wire carrying a current, or a moving
charge experiences a force

 field lines go from north to south
 Magnetic field is the strongest where lines are
closer




Magnetic field patterns:




 Reversing current reverses direction
 All magnetic fields are created by moving
charges




Field directions and hand rules:
1. Right hand grip rule (solenoid) –
Wrap fingers around the coil
Fingers – direction of current
Thumb – Points towards magnets north pole

2. Right hand rule (current carrying wire) –
Wrap fingers around the wire
