Unit 1: Communication

Script for Role Play one-to-one communication:
Effective
I am a recent UK resident from Philippines and doesn’t know much English. After
discovering unusual spots on her skin, she goes to the doctor, GP, to find out.
(I enter the GP’s room)

Me: Hello
GP: Hi, please take a seat and tell me what is wrong.
Me: (Sits down and rolls up sleeves) Um, parts of my skin is red
GP: Ah yes, I see. I will just take a closer look.
(The GP analyses my skin and confirms a diagnosis)
It is very clear that you have German measles.
Me: Ano yun? I mean what is that?
GP: It is a type of skin disease, affecting other parts of your skin and can weaken your
muscles. I will need to refer you to a dermatologist as soon as possible to see if it will be
a serious condition or not.
Me: I sorry, di ko alam. Ang gulo. (scratches head)
GP: (talks slowly, using hand gestures) So, something has happened to your skin and
we need to check it. Don’t worry it is not a very bad thing. I will book an appointment for
you tomorrow to see the person who will look at this better than me.
Me: Who the person?
GP: He or she will be called a dermatologist who is really good with looking at the skin
and problems. I will write the details for you and where the person is, I hope that will
make it easier.
Me: Yes, thank you.
GP: (Hands me a piece of paper with the information and shows me the door). Alright,
well thank you for coming to see me and I hope you feel better soon.
Me: Thank you very much. Bye.
I leave the clinic with some understanding of the condition. I also feel confident and now
I have confidence of what to do next, due to GP’s approach in tackling my barriers to
communication.
