D1- Evaluate the success of a recent initiative in promoting anti-discriminatory
D2- Justify ways of overcoming difficulties that may arise when implementing
anti-discriminatory practices in health and social care settings
A recent initiative that had a success on implementing anti-discriminatory practice is the
Disability Discrimination Act 2005 (DDA). This act helps to improve the life of individuals
who are disabled; it helps to eliminate discrimination against them through employment
and also through public transport. It helps them with employment because the Act
makes sure that employers do not mention anything about not wanting disabled people
in their “job requirements”. If a disabled person was to apply for the job, they may need
to go through what the non-disabled people have to go through to see if they fit the
standards of the job. This is a way that the employers and the Disability Discrimination
Act 2005 promote anti-discriminatory practice in employment because a disabled
person is with the other non-disabled person when being assessed for the job. The
Disability Discrimination Act isn’t only important through employment, it is also important
through education and how you treat a disabled person in a health and social care
setting. Health and social settings have to adapt their centres/services in order to make
sure that disabled people do not feel isolated from non-disabled people.
There are certain cases where disability can help motivate people to achieve their
dreams and ambitions. For example, Tim Harris. He has Down’s syndrome is a genetic
condition that typically causes some level of learning disabilities. He overcame that
through encouragement and with his hard work and determinations he now owns a
successful restaurant.
The Disability Discrimination Act helps the society to respect people with disabilities to
achieve something better in life and to avoid the criticism that could bring them down.
On the contrary, the Disability Discrimination Act doesn’t entirely eliminate the
prejudgement on disabled people. It can limit other opportunities such as, jobs and
education.
