Mobile Technology
• Portable communication devices used while on the move
• e.g., smartphones, tablets, smartwatches
• Uses wireless communication networks to send and receive information.
How Mobile Phones Work
• A mobile phone works like a two-way radio.
• It contains a radio transmitter and radio receiver.
• The microphone captures the user’s voice.
• A microchip converts the voice into an electrical signal which is transmitted as radio waves.
Radio Waves
• Mobile phones communicate using radio waves.
• Radio waves carry digitised voice and data through the air.
• They travel at the speed of light.
• Phones transmit radio waves in all directions.
Antennas
• Mobile phones contain at least one antenna.
• The antenna converts electrical signals into radio waves when transmitting.
• It converts radio waves back into electrical signals when receiving.
Switching on a Mobile Phone
• When a phone is switched on it searches for a mobile network.
• It listens for a System Identification Code (SID).
• SID is a unique code assigned to each network provider.
• If no signal is found the phone displays 'No Service'.
• If the SID matches, the phone registers with the network and its location is recorded.
Making a Mobile Phone Call
• The microphone captures the user's voice.
• The phone converts the voice into a digital radio signal.
• The antenna broadcasts the signal.
• The signal is sent to the nearest mobile phone mast.
Mobile Phone Mast
• A tall tower with antennas used to transmit and receive signals.
• It receives radio signals from mobile phones.
• It sends the signal to a base station.
