DEVELOPMENT NOTES (LOB)
Nature vs Nurture
There has been an ongoing debate about what truly plays the
biggest part in an individual’s development: whether it’s the
innate genetic influence that a person has, or if it’s the
environment that the person has been raised in. The ultimate
debate of nature vs nurture, both of which make up human
behaviour.

Deterministic Approach – All behaviour has a cause, thus
making it predictable
Free Will – The power of acting without the constant of
necessity, OUR choice
Maturation Theory – States that development is driven by an
internal genetically programmed timetable, creating the
developmental sequence of milestones ~ We all develop in the
same chronological order, and development starts at
conception
The NATURE Argument
Appearance is a direct product of our genes, as well as certain
inheritable conditions – supported by theorists including
Chomsky, Bowlby and Gesell.
The NURTURE Argument ~ Bandura’s Theory of Social Learning
Bandura suggested that we become who we are based off the
consequences of our surroundings, and that we learn and copy
the behaviour we see, alongside 4 stages of learning:
