AC1.1- technological crime

What is it?
Technological crime is a cyber-crime which is any form of crime that is offended using the
internet or technology.

Criminal offences
Some examples of technological crime are cyber bullying, illegal music download, stalking,
phishing, trolling and cyber trespassing.

Type of victim
Typical victims of technological crime are old people, those who aren’t used to the internet
and owners of music and videos. However, anyone who is on the internet can be a victim of
this type of crime.

Type of offender
The type of offender for this type of crime tends to be those with high tech ability and
usually teenagers or younger people who have more knowledge with technology.

Level of public awareness
Often, technological crime has a high level of public awareness due to the number of
campaigns and adverts that have been made to encourage awareness. On the other hand,
there is low public awareness due to the complexity of how the crimes are committed. As
well as this, people are unaware that the crime has been committed.

Criminal or deviant?
Technological crime is only criminal depending on the crime. Some aren’t illegal but some
are against the laws of England and wales but they’re all deviant as they’re against the
societal norms.

AC1.2- technological crime

Personal reasons
One personal reason of not reporting technological crime is shame. This is because people
may be embarrassed that they fell for this crime and wouldn’t want to own up to being a
victim.

Social and cultural reasons
One social and cultural reason for not reporting this crime may be lack of knowledge as
people may not know that the crime has taken place. Therefore they can’t report the crime
if they are unaware it has happened.
