AC1.1- hate crime

What is it?
Hate crime is a crime which is motivated by prejudice and is split into 5 strands. These are
race or ethnicity, religion or beliefs, sexual orientation, disability and transgender identity.

Criminal offences
Some examples of hate crime are verbal abuse, physical abuse, damage to property and
threats. There are many more things that are examples of this crime.

Type of victim
Typical victims of this crime often tend to be people with different race or ethnicity, different
religion or beliefs, different sexual orientation, a disability, transgender, different age or sex
to the offender.

Type of offender
The usual type of offender is people with hateful and prejudice views who are sometimes
racists or those with strong views against others in society. It also could be someone who
has traditional views.

Level of public awareness
Often, there is a high level of public awareness as newspaper articles have raised awareness
which has caused a rise in understanding of this area of crime. On the other hand, there is a
low understanding due to history as people believed that hate crimes were normal.

Criminal or deviant?
This crime is seen to be both criminal and deviant. This is because it is against the laws of
England and Wales as well as being viewed as morally wrong as it is hurtful to others in
society.

AC1.2- hate crime

Personal reasons
One personal reason people may not report hate crime is due to fear. This may be because
they’re scared that the crime will continue to repeat more often if they report this crime to
the police. Others may fear to report it in case it happens to them.

Social and cultural reasons
One social and cultural reason for people not reporting this type of crime is lack of
knowledge. This is because people are unaware it is a crime so they’re unaware of the need
to report it.
