AC1.1 – domestic abuse
What is it?
Domestic abuse is abusive behaviour which is aimed at intimate partners or within family
relationships. It tends to be where the abuser tries to shows power and control towards the
victim.
Criminal offences
Some examples of domestic abuse is controlling behaviour, gaslighting, physical or mental
abuse, torture and murder. Many other types of behaviour fall under this type of crime.
Type of victim
The typical victim tends to be females between 16-24 years old. This is only mainly, and this
is not exclusive. Males may also be victims, but they tend to be under reported. It may occur
between couples who are on low income as they’re reliant on each other and can’t leave.
Type of offender
In most cases, the offender tends to be the males. They also tend to occur within long term
relationships as the signs are then less obvious.
Level of public awareness
Typically, there is a low level of public awareness on domestic abuse as historically it
happens behind closed doors. People may not be aware that its wrong as it happens
between loved ones.
Criminal or deviant?
Domestic abuse is criminal as its against the laws of England and Wales. As well as this its
viewed as deviant because you shouldn’t hurt anyone let alone the ones you love.

Personal reasons
One personal reason for not reporting domestic abuse could be because they’re ashamed
that they’re in this situation and can’t get out of it.
Social and cultural reasons
One social and cultural reason for not reporting domestic abuse is because of lack of
knowledge that this crime is happening. This may be because people won’t open up about
being a victim of this type of crime. Also, this crime happens behind closed doors so no one
else can report it.
