Criminology – practise paragraphs AC2.1

Campaigns for change are used to influence society, to change a law, raise
funding, change lives etc. I have chosen to compare the campaigns of Clare’s
Law, Ann Ming’s Double Jeopardy Law, #knifefree, assisted dying campaign. I
chose these campaigns so I could compare the similarities and differences
and if it was worth the campaign.

Background of campaign
Clare’s law was a campaign which was created by Michael Brown to try and
change the law. He created this after his daughter was murdered in 2009 by
her ex-boyfriend who had previous history for violence which they were
unaware of. The family of Clare complained multiple times to the police and
no change occurred. Michael Brown wanted the law to change to allow
people to access their partners or family’s previous data so they can escape
while they still can. Similarly, the change to the Double Jeopardy law was
created by Ann Ming in response to the tragic murder of her daughter Julie
Hogg in 1989. Her murderer Billy Dunnop was acquitted twice for the same
crime due to lack of evidence. He confessed to the murder of Julie in 1999,
yet the 800 year old double jeopardy law prevented his sentence. Ann Ming
created this campaign to try and get justice for her daughter and didn’t want
others to suffer from what her and her family is. Likewise, the assisted dying
campaign was also to try and change the law of euthanasia. They wanted to
give those suffering with long term illnesses the chance to preplan their
death and chose when, where and how they die. They wanted to prevent the
suffering of others for longer than they wish. On the other hand, the #knife
free campaign was to try and change societies viewpoints and behaviour on
carrying knives, typical 10–21-year-olds. It was started by home offices to
make society a safer environment. They saw the benefits to some people’s
lives and wanted to see this effect on more young people. This was in
response to a high amount of reported knife crimes and possession of knives.

Driving forces
Clare’s Law was a parent led campaign run by her father. Michael Brown
believed he could have saved his daughters life and felt guilt for this. He
wanted to protect many other families from this situation and reduce
violence within relationships and families by trying to change the 800-year-
old law. In a similar fashion, the Double Jeopardy Law was also a parent led
campaign which was run by her mother. Ann Ming saw the legal system fail
after personal experiences when Julie hogg was murdered by her partner and
nothing was followed up by it. She wanted to stop criminals getting away
from punishment and she didn’t agree with the fact that he’s free and her
daughter was the one who suffered and died. Moreover, the Assisted dying
campaign was created to give those suffering control over their life while
they still can. 86% of those suffering with a long-term disability believe there
