State crime AC1.1

One of the crimes we have looked at is state crime. This type of crime is carried out on
behalf of a government in order to further their own policies. This could include
genocide, touture, war crimes and imprisonment without trial. Typical offenders of a
state crime include citizens from another country or they could be targeted due to their
religious or political beliefs being different to what’s expected from them.Usual offenders
are high ranking government officials. Examples include Nazi Germany, Idi Amin and
Bosnia. The speed of media reporting often makes these crimes higher profiled than
other crimes. They tend to be horrific so they grab the public's attention. In 2001, the G8
summits were being held in the Italian city of Genoa and they were met with heavy
protesting. An officer was allegedly stabbed in the leg. 93 arrests were made and two
improvised explosives were found at the scene. 72 protesters were injured with
witnesses speaking of riot police beating them. The police however, claimed that there
was justification for their actions. Two years later it was discovered that the stabbing
and the bombs were planted by the Italian police. This is criminal as it goes against
international law, however, it is deviant as it goes against the moral compass of a
society.

State crime AC1.2

There are a number of different reasons why state crimes are unlikely to get reported
PERSONAL: such as financial reasons. The person may not report the crime as they is
a chance they could lose money if they do. PERSONAL: A person may have lost
interest in the crime. So if they witness a crime they may not be even bothered to report
it.. PERSONAL: The person may fear the consequences for themselves or their family
of reporting the crime to the police .PERSONAL: The person may feel embarrassed
that they were a victim of that particular crime. They may also have a lack of knowledge
as they may be unaware that it is a crime. PERSONAL/SOCIAL: A state crime can be
very complex so if someone was to report such crime it would usually go unnoticed or
may never be reported. SOCIAL: Some cultural groups see reporting crimes to the
police as grassing so they would never do it.
