Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development
Piaget’s theory covers an insight into the way that a child’s
intellect progresses as they grow from infancy to adolescence,
through 4 stages: Sensorimotor, Pre-Operational, Concrete
Operational and Formal Operational:


Sensorimotor Stage  0-2 Years old
 Experiences are made
through the senses
(sight, hearing, touch,
taste, smell)
 Development of a
working memory
 Gaining awareness of
objects
 Growth in curiosity
 Development of gross
motor skills
Pre-Operational Stage  2-7 Years
 Expanded imagination
 Learning how to speak
 More Symbolism
 A significant growth in
curiosity – Children reach
their intuitive age
 Children tend to have a
more egocentric way of
thinking ~ unable to
think in perspectives
other than their own
Concrete Operational Stage  7-11 years old
 Discovering logic
 Children work on puzzle
skills and problem
