PIES Development Across Life Stages
Growth – “Increase in Physical size”, number of body cells increase,
individual cells grow bigger, and bodily functions become more
sophisticated.
Development – seen as a “Mental Growth”, increasing skills, abilities
and capacities, which ALWAYS occurs in a set orderly sequence. Comes
in MANY factors, primarily Physical, Intellectual, Emotional and Social.
Important to recognise that everyone develops at a different rate.
The principles of Growth
1. Growth Rates are never constant – There are many external and
internal influences that can have drastic effects on an individual’s
growth, including genetic factors (e.g. predisposition), biological
factors (e.g. Hormonal fluctuations during particular life stages,
such as adolescence) and
environmental factors,
such as air quality
(pollution, allergens, etc.)
2. Different parts of the
body grow at different
rates –Fluctuations are
likely to be consistent
when an individual
undergoes growth. For
example, one arm on the
body may be growing at
a more rapid rate than the other, never meeting an equilibrium
throughout the individual’s lifetime.
3. A male’s growth rate is faster than a female’s growth rate – This
is primarily because males tend to have more growing to catch
up on holistically, especially due to hormonal changes during life
stages, such as adolescence.
