How to Use This Guide
This guide explains the TOEFL iBT format used for tests taken on or after 21 January 2026. It combines
verified exam information with an independent preparation system, original examples and practical self-
assessment tools.
START WITH YOUR TEST DATE
If your appointment is before 21 January 2026, this is not the correct format. If it is on or after that date, use
the updated task map throughout this guide.
• Read Sections 1–4 before planning your preparation.
• Practise task types separately before attempting a complete simulation.
• Use the models as demonstrations of decisions, not scripts to memorise.
• Confirm the score requirement directly with every institution you apply to.
Accuracy and independence note
Format, timing and score statements were checked against ETS materials available in August 2026. Base
times and item totals may vary because Reading and Listening adapt. ETS does not define a universal
passing score; institutions establish their own requirements.

1. The 2026 Update in One Page
Change What it means for candidates
Launch date The updated test applies worldwide to appointments on or after 21 January 2026.
Adaptive sections Reading and Listening use a two-stage design: a router module leads to an upper or lower
second module.
New task mix All four sections use the task types listed in the official 2026 blueprint; several retired tasks no
longer belong in current preparation.
Broader contexts The test combines academic communication with daily-life, social-interpersonal and campus-
navigation language.
Updated scoring Overall and section scores are reported from 1 to 6 in half-point increments.
CEFR alignment Scores map directly from A1 to C2, making proficiency interpretation more transparent.
Transition reporting For two years after the update, score reports also include a comparable overall result on the
0–120 scale.
RETIRE OLD ASSUMPTIONS
Do not prepare for the pre-2026 version by default. The updated Writing section includes Build a Sentence
and Write an Email; Speaking includes Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview.
What did not change
• The test still reports Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking performance.
• The test remains computer-delivered at authorised centres or through the Home Edition.
• Institutions—not ETS—set their own minimum score requirements.
• Official scores remain valid for two years from the test date.
