Prepare effectively for IELTS Academic Writing Task 2 with this comprehensive and accessible 26-page study guide. It is designed for university applicants, immigration candidates and independent learners who want to understand the writing skills associated with Bands 7–9. The guide explains all four IELTS Writing assessment criteria: Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. It provides practical guidance on planning and writing formal essays of at least 250 words within the recommended 40-minute period. The document covers the five major Task 2 essay types: opinion, discussion and opinion, advantages and disadvantages, problem and solution, and two-part question essays. It also explains introduction and thesis construction, the PEEL body-paragraph framework, effective conclusions, cohesive devices, lexical chains, referencing and advanced grammatical structures. Additional features include original model essays, advanced grammar examples, sentence-transformation activities, cohesion exercises, common mistakes and a final Band 8+ self-assessment checklist. This guide uses clear explanations, organised tables and practical examples, making it suitable for self-study, classroom revision and intensive IELTS preparation. This is an independently created educational resource. It is not an official IELTS publication and is not affiliated with or endorsed by IELTS or its partner organisations.

How to Use This Guide
This guide turns the IELTS Writing Task 2 criteria into a repeatable writing process. It is designed for
readers who understand English but need a clearer system for planning, developing and checking an
academic essay under time pressure.

START HERE
If your test is close, read Sections 1-5, study one model essay, complete the five-minute final check, and then
write a timed response. If you have two weeks, follow the study plan near the end of the guide.

• Read the assessment criteria before memorising any structure.
• Practise one essay type at a time, then mix prompt types.
• Use the advanced grammar section selectively: accuracy comes before complexity.
• Compare your writing with the checklist, not only with a model answer.

Important accuracy note
Official IELTS materials require a minimum of 250 words and recommend approximately 40 minutes for
Task 2. Task 2 is worth twice as much as Task 1. The four Task 2 criteria are equally weighted within the
task. However, IELTS does not prescribe a four-paragraph essay, PEEL paragraphs, a fixed number of
linking words, or named grammatical structures. Those are teaching tools in this guide, not hidden
scoring rules.

The model essays are instructional demonstrations. They are not past IELTS examination papers and they
do not guarantee a particular band score.
