Di erence between sex and gender =
• sex = the biological di erences between males and females - includes
chromosomes, hormones and anatomy - it is the result nature (is innate)
• Gender = the psychological and cultural di erences between men and women -
includes attitudes, behaviours and social roles - it is the result of nurture (is learnt
and acquired through life)
Sex role stereotypes =
De nition: is a set of ideas about behaviours/traits/characteristics that are appropriate/
expected for males and females
• they are generally shared by members of society/culture
• Sex role stereotypes acts as a short cut to appropriate behaviours in a given
context; girls will behave in ways they understand to be typically female and boys
will behave in ways they understand to be typically male
• They may or may not represent something real - based on fact or may not be, e.g a
sex role stereotype with no biological basis is that men do the DIY in the house like
putting up shelves and woman sort the address book and send birthday cards
• Sex role stereotypes can come from the media and tv
• Sex role stereotypes are developed though social learning theory, psychodynamic
(Freud) and cognitive explanations
