Behaviour learnt through conditioning
Humans and animals learn in similar ways

• When we are born our mind is like a blank slate
• What we learn through interactions with environment determines our behaviour, we do not have
conscious thoughts about behaviour
• Approach believes nurture over nature – environmental determinism
• Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution:
- Natural selection- those who adapt to their environment are more likely to survive and produce
offspring and pass on the successful genes
- Sexual selection- ability to attract and compete for a mate to reproduce and pass on successful genes
• Bandura (1963)- children learn aggression from role models- expressed this towards a doll compared
to group with a non-aggressive role model that did not behave aggressively
