Working title of my Extended Project. Present the topic to be researched in the form of a
short statement/question/hypothesis with clear focus.
Who were the most influential members of the Vienna Circle and how did they impact modern
mathematics?
This title is derived from looking at potential areas of research, which I had displayed on a
mind-map. I plan to look at either how influential the Vienna Circle were as a whole or how the
members came to the conclusions on their respective publications. However, these titles are
vague and it would not be feasible to write an evaluative report given the deadlines. Instead, I
am converging the two ideas together, to write about the core members of the Vienna Circle
and how influential their contributions to mathematics are. This creates a critical analysis of the
Vienna Circle, highlighting the prominence of the Circle throughout the late 20th Century and
early 21st century.
The title I am currently using allows for extensive research into the individuals of the Circle,
analysing not only their publications, individually and collectively, but also how these
publications influenced other mathematicians. Combining these gives an inclusive project that
properly investigates the true extent of the Vienna Circle’s influence to modern mathematics.
However, as I continue my research, I may need to adjust the title according to the course of
my research, as I may find a new area of research that I would like to further look into. My title
could potentially be challenging to research as it is a subjective topic, assessing how influential
the Circle was. Problems could arise from researching the particular field, so I intend to gauge
the influence of the Circle through the works of other mathematicians, by identifying the
proportion of the Vienna Circle’s work used in successive works by other mathematicians.

My initial research consists of academic literature that I have obtained from websites such as
Google Scholar and JSTOR. These resources have provided me with a plethora of information
that I am using to write my report.
I have found an abundance of journal articles that I have used for my contextual research -
investigating how the Nazis coming into power affected the Austrian population. Austria was
surrounded by fascist countries and as war ensued, Vienna suffered from allied bombing from
1943 and intense fighting in the city’s centre . This meant the Vienna Circle would have
suffered greatly from external factors and so would have been increasingly onerous to publish
their works given the circumstances (Schwarz. R, 1979).
