The 3P Framework (Predisposing, Precipitating and Perpetuating
Factors)

The 3P Framework is a biopsychosocial assessment model used to understand
how psychological, behavioural and social difficulties develop and are maintained
over time. The framework helps practitioners identify the factors that contribute
to the onset of a problem, the events that trigger it and the influences that keep
it going. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms or diagnoses, the 3P
Framework provides a holistic understanding of an individual's circumstances by
considering biological, psychological and social influences. Within social work, it
supports comprehensive assessment, formulation and intervention planning by
encouraging practitioners to understand the complexity of people's lives before
identifying appropriate support (Macneil et al., 2012).

The 3P Framework originated within clinical psychology and psychiatry as part of
psychological formulation models rather than diagnostic approaches. It reflects

factors are often recent or significant life events, such as bereavement,
relationship breakdown, domestic abuse, unemployment, financial hardship,
physical illness, housing instability, safeguarding concerns or major life
transitions. While these events may not have caused the underlying
