GIFT Model

The GIFT Model is a structured communication framework used within
safeguarding practice to support professionals when responding to disclosures or
concerns about abuse, neglect or exploitation. The acronym GIFT stands for
Gather Information, Immediate Safety, Find Support and Take Action. The model
provides practitioners with a clear process for responding calmly, appropriately
and consistently when safeguarding concerns arise. Rather than encouraging
professionals to investigate allegations themselves, the GIFT Model emphasises
listening carefully, ensuring safety, recording information accurately and
following local safeguarding procedures. Within social work, the model supports
effective professional judgement while promoting the welfare and protection of
children and adults at risk.

The GIFT Model was developed as a practical safeguarding tool to assist
professionals working across education, health, social care and community
services. It reflects principles contained within statutory safeguarding guidance,
including the importance of early identification, information sharing, multi-
agency working and timely intervention. The model is designed to help
practitioners respond confidently when concerns first emerge while ensuring that
appropriate safeguarding processes are followed. It is not a substitute for
statutory assessment but rather a framework that guides professionals in taking
the correct initial actions.

The first stage, Gather Information, involves listening carefully to the individual,
observing signs of abuse or neglect and recording factual information accurately.
Practitioners should avoid asking leading questions or attempting to investigate
concerns, instead allowing the individual to speak freely while maintaining a
calm, supportive and non-judgemental approach. Accurate recording is essential
because information gathered at this stage may later contribute to safeguarding
assessments or legal proceedings.

The second stage, Immediate Safety, requires practitioners to consider whether
the individual is at immediate risk of harm. Where there is an urgent threat to
life or safety, emergency services should be contacted without delay. If
immediate danger is not present, professionals should still consider any actions
required to reduce ongoing risk while ensuring that the individual receives
appropriate reassurance and support.

The third stage, Find Support, emphasises the importance of consulting
safeguarding leads, managers and relevant agencies. Safeguarding is rarely the
responsibility of a single professional, and effective responses require
collaboration between organisations. Social workers, police, healthcare
professionals, schools and specialist safeguarding services may all contribute to
assessing risk and planning appropriate interventions. Seeking advice also
supports professional accountability and ensures that decisions are informed by
organisational policies and statutory guidance.

The final stage, Take Action, involves making appropriate referrals, sharing
information lawfully and implementing safeguarding procedures. Actions may
