Approaches to Learning

Experiential learning theory suggests that learning occurs through active
engagement in experiences, which are processed through a cyclical four-stage
model. Kolb (1984) identifies these stages as concrete experience, reflective
observation, abstract conceptualisation, and active experimentation. Concrete
experience involves direct engagement with a task or event, such as
participating in an activity, reading, or having a conversation. In reflective
observation, the learner considers the experience, examining it from a personal
perspective to understand what occurred. Abstract conceptualisation allows
learners to integrate prior knowledge, wider experiences, and theoretical
frameworks to form general principles. Finally, active experimentation involves
applying these insights to test hypotheses in new situations, facilitating further
learning and refinement of skills. This cyclical approach ensures that learning is
both reflective and applied, supporting continuous development.

Honey and Mumford (2000) expanded on experiential learning by identifying four
distinct approaches to learning. The intuitive approach occurs when learning
emerges naturally from experiences, often without conscious analysis, though
individuals may be able to describe what happened in detail. The incidental
approach describes learning that occurs by chance, where experiences are
informally reflected upon and understood retrospectively. The retrospective
approach involves deliberate reflection after an experience to draw conclusions
and extract learning, whereas the prospective approach emphasises planning for
learning prior to an experience, recognising future tasks as intentional
opportunities for development.

Learning styles further illustrate individual differences in how people engage with
learning experiences. Activists are open-minded and enthusiastic, preferring
active engagement and new experiences, though they may become bored once
an activity concludes. Reflectors tend to observe and ponder experiences from
multiple perspectives before acting, gathering information and taking time to
think critically. Theorists approach learning logically, analysing information step
by step, questioning new knowledge, and seeking coherence, often displaying
perfectionist tendencies. Pragmatists focus on practical application,
experimenting with ideas to assess their effectiveness, and are quick to abandon
approaches that do not work in practice. Understanding these learning styles can
help educators and practitioners tailor learning experiences to individual needs.
