STARBUCKS
INTRODUCTION
Headquartered in the Starbucks Centre, the company was founded in 1971 by Jerry Baldwin, Zev
Siegl, and Gordon Bowker at Seattle's Pike Place Market. Starbucks Corporation is an American
multinational chain of coffeehouses and roastery reserves headquartered in Seattle, Washington. As
the world's largest coffeehouse chain, Starbucks is seen to be the main representation of the United
States' second wave of coffee culture. As of early 2020, the company operates over 30,000 locations
worldwide in more than 70 countries. Starbucks locations serve hot and cold drinks, whole-bean
coffee, micro ground instant coffee known as VIA, espresso, caffe latte, full- and loose-
leaf teas including Teavana tea products, Evolution Fresh juices, Frappuccino beverages, La
Boulange pastries, and snacks including items such as chips and crackers; some offerings are
seasonal or specific to the locality of the store. Starbucks’s revenue growth also reflects its
success: Starbucks’ annual revenue almost tripled in the last ten years, reaching 22.39 billion U.S.
dollars in 2017. Further continuing its global expansion, Starbucks increased its number of
establishments by around two thousand during 2017, totalling 27,339 stores by the end of the fiscal
year. Well over half of the company’s coffee shops are found in its home country, the United States.
As well as having the largest number of stores worldwide within the coffee chain industry, Starbucks
also generates the most revenue. The company’s closest competitor was the UK based coffee house
chain Costa Coffee. Within the broader quick-service industry, Starbucks was the second most
valuable fast food brand worldwide in 2017, second only to global giant McDonald’s. Starbucks is
seen to be the main representation of the United States' second wave of coffee culture. As of
early 2020, the company operates over 30,000 locations worldwide in more than 70 countries.

R&S PROCESS
1. Defining the role
Starbucks needs to define the role by creating a job description and a person specification role.
Any job description is to outline the main duties and responsibilities that are involved in a
particular job. A job description contains job title, job purpose, job duties and responsibilities,
Starbucks baristas perform several job duties and provide customer service. Additionally, person
specification is a description of the qualifications, skills, experience, knowledge and other
attributes which a candidate must possess to perform the job duties. The specification should be
derived from the job description and forms the foundation for the recruitment process. For
example, if a candidate is applying for a position in Starbucks they are required to promote the
culture, value, and missions of Starbucks. Also, provide an excellent customer service to all
guests (skill: communication), able to work under pressure and maintains a calm demeanour at
all times (skill: works well under pressure), maintains the store and anticipates the customer’s
needs (skill: good planning skills), someone who always arrives at their shift on time and
maintains a consistent attendance (skill: punctual), able to work flexible hours that include early
mornings, evenings, weekends, nights and possible holidays, is a great multi-tasker and able to
perform many different tasks within the store during each shift (skill: multitasker) and prepares
beverages, food products, and handles cash (skill: attention to detail).
2. Attracting applications
Starbucks needs to attract their applicants by advertising their vacancies so they can grab
applicants’ attention, to do this they need to create a job advert which the main goal is to inform
potential job candidates about a new opening and attract them to apply. It is written in an

, engaging tone and it contains information not only about the job position, but also about the
company and the benefits it offers. Starbucks uses internal and external advertising to attract
applicants. They can use internal methods to advertise a vacancy which is often carried out
through internal job adverts published via internal emails, notice boards, business websites and
internal company memos. For example, there would be promotions within the business, circulate
the job opportunity in a 'News' email, keep an updated Jobs/Careers section on the company
intranet, post the job on the corporate website or pin the job ad on the company noticeboard.
Starbucks can also use external methods this means advertising vacancies to people outside of
the business. It includes most of the ads and is designed to make an audience aware of
Starbucks's mission, services, or products. To grab applicant’s attention Starbucks, offer
competitive salaries, is to make sure that they are offering competitive pay rates and make the
vacancies easy to read. For example, external advertising methods that Starbucks use are
company websites, employee referrals, job board, networking, job fairs and social media.
3. Managing the application and selection process
Starbucks needs to analyse the candidate’s information for the job to select the right candidate
for the job. The candidate will need to send their information and documents when there are
applying so the managers can have a look to them and make the interview. Also, Starbucks offer
a lot of jobs in different places where candidates can apply directly in Starbucks’s websites where
they just need to create an Starbucks account for them to contact each candidate, also they need
to write their application form and upload their CV so after Starbucks will send an email to them
to confirm the interview or if they need more documents. To select the right candidate Starbucks
will need to realise an interview with each of them to get to know the candidate, see if they are
capable for the job and if they comply with the person specification required.
n

4. Making the appointment
After Starbucks have checked all the candidates’ application form; an application form is an
official document that a potential employer will require candidates to complete when applying
for a vacancy. The application form allows the employer to pose a series of specific questions
that every candidate must answer. Also, checked the candidates’ CV which is a written overview
of the candidate’s skills, education, and work experience. They may be used for a variety of
reasons, however, the most common of these is to send to prospective employers when looking
for a new job. Starbucks will contact each of them by email or mobile phone to confirm a day and
a time for the interview job. Starbucks realise their interviews in the store where the candidate
has applied, the candidate will be interviewer by the store manager, and they use an individual
interview. In individual interviews, an interviewer talks with one candidate face-to-face for 30
minutes to an hour. Individual interviews allow to probe their attitudes, beliefs, desires, and
experiences to get a deeper understanding of the candidates who come to the site.

REASONS TO RECRUIT AT STARBUCKS
 Replacing employees who leave
In Starbucks staff may leave a job for a number of reasons. They may have gained a promotion,
either within the business or in another business, they may have retired, or they may be leaving
to do something completely different. In addition, some staff will leave because they have been
