Best exam strategy for Latin Literature

1. Know the mark pattern
Treat the paper as a marks-per-minute exam.
You have 90 minutes for 80 marks, so aim for about 1 minute per mark, leaving a
few minutes to check.
A good timing plan:
Task Marks Time
Passage question 1 about 16–17 min
15
Passage question 2 about 16–17 min
15
10-mark essay 10 10–12 min
Repeat for second section 40 about 42–45 min
Final check — 3–5 min
Do not spend too long on a 1- or 2-mark question. The essay is important, but the
small questions add up quickly.

2. For passage questions: use the “mark = point” rule
For a 2-mark question, give two clear facts.
For a 4-mark analysis question, usually give two developed points:
Latin quotation → technique/meaning → effect
Example structure:
The word/phrase “_____” suggests _____. This makes the character seem _____
because _____.
Do not just quote Latin. Always explain the effect.

3. When the question says “refer to the Latin”
This means the examiner wants short Latin quotations, not long copied lines.
Best method:
Latin word or phrase + English meaning + effect.
For example:
The adjective “” means “”, which creates a feeling of fear/pity/anger because _____.
Avoid writing:
The writer uses good words to make it dramatic.
That is too vague.

4. Learn a small bank of literary techniques
The paper rewards technique-spotting, but only if you explain the effect. Revise
these:
Technique What to say about effect
