Aim

The aim of this experiment is to prepare and synthesise aspirin using salicylic
acid (limiting reactant) and ethanoic anhydride with the addition of a catalyst
(sulfuric acid). In this experiment the following reaction will occur to produce
aspirin:

HOOCC6H4OH + (CH3CO)2O ® HOOCC6H4OCOCH3 + CH3COOH
salicylic acid ethanoic aspirin ethanoic
anhydride acid

In addition to this, the purity of aspirin will be tested using different methods in
the laboratory and from carrying out these tests, a conclusion can be drawn
about the purity of aspirin.
