Unit 4: Laboratory Techniques and their
Application
1) Using a measuring cylinder, measure out 25cm 3 of ethanoic acid into a pear
shaped flask.
2) Transfer 20cm3 of ethanol using the measuring cylinder and pour into the pear
shaped flask.
3) Add 5cm3 of sulfuric acid to the pear shaped flask using a pipette.
4) Place anti-bumping granules to the flask using a spatula (1/2).
5) Set up the apparatus for heating under reflux. This can be done by firstly
attaching the condenser and pear shaped flask to each clamp on the clamp
stand. Then secure with a clip to ensure the pear shaped flask is securely
attached to the condenser. Place a tube on each opening on the condenser, the
opening at the top is where the water will come out so the tube should be placed
from the opening to the sink and the opening at the bottom is where the water
will come in, therefore the tube should be placed from the opening to the tap.
Put a heating mantle directly under the pear shaped flask and connect it to a
power source- turn the setting on the heating mantle to ‘5’. Once this is done,
turn the tap on to start the reflux.
6) Heat under reflux for 30 minutes and allow to cool once finished.

Method

1) Add some water to a separating funnel- this is done as all of the reaction
mixture is water-soluble except for the product.
2) Carefully transfer the reaction mixture to the separating funnel.
