Television
Campaigns often use TV as a way to promote their campaign, through advertisements and
appearances on programmes, such as the National news. One advantage of using television
for campaigns is, if a campaign appears on a popular tv programme, such as BBC news, the
campaign will reach a wider audience, possibly increasing the number of supporters the
campaign has. TV advertising can also be used to promote a campaigns message. An
example of where this went well is the “ending the harm” campaign, which appeared on TV
as an advertisement. The campaign used the advertisement to promote the message of their
campaign, highlighting the impact of the paramilitary style attacks. Their advertisement
reduced the acceptance of paramilitary style attacks to 19%, showing TV advertisements can
be an affective way of promoting campaigns. Another advantage of using television is
appearances by representatives of the campaign on a TV programme can help promote the
campaigns image, as the audience will be able to hear about the campaign through the
creators themselves, so they can ask questions etc. Disadvantages of using television for
campaigns include, TV advertising can be extremely expensive, £180 for just smaller digital
channels, which could not be available to campaigns with a smaller budget. Another
disadvantage is most viewers may skip certain adverts by switching channels, meaning the
campaigns message will not reach a wider audience. Also, some presenters of a TV show
may present the campaign in a negative light, which could create a negative image of the
campaign. An example where a campaign has used TV advertising is the “like a girl”
campaign. The campaign appeared on TV to break stereotypes and empower women. The
advert was a success, reaching a huge audience of more than 70 million YouTube hits.
Overall, I think using Television to promote campaigns is an effective way to reach a wide
audience, although it is very expensive, it gives campaigns lots of opportunities to promote
their cause.
Social networking
Social media allows you to post pictures and videos on applications and websites online,
which lots of organisations and campaigners use to their advantage, to advertise the
message of their campaign as social media is extremely popular in today’s society. This can
include posting videos on YouTube or Vimeo, or posting messages or pictures on twitter,
Facebook or Instagram. One advantage of using social networking is campaigners can post
pictures or messages on their social network sites, which immediately reach and notify their
followers. This means that a campaign can spread their message easily through social media,
to their target audience and engage with their current followers. Social networking also
allows the sharing of posts and messages, meaning the post can be shared and spread
quickly. This will attract new and potential followers, targeting specific social network users.
An example of where this went well is the Worldwide Breast Cancer #knowyourlemons
campaign. They aimed to spread awareness among women for breast cancer. Their post
reached 7.3 million views, as people were sharing it to others online, with only 3 Facebook
posts. Another advantage of social networking is it doesn’t cost anything to create an
