RSE4801 Assignment 2: Section B – Researching Learner
Alienation
1. Problem Statement: Understanding Learner Alienation
In many contemporary classrooms, students experience a sense of "alienation"—a
feeling of being disconnected from the curriculum, their teachers, and the purpose of
education. This is not just "laziness"; it is often a result of ontological erasure
(where their identity is ignored) and epistemicide (where their local knowledge is
treated as invalid). To solve this, we must first understand the subjective experience
of the learners.
2. The Selected Paradigm: The Interpretive Paradigm
To research this problem, I will use the Interpretive Paradigm. Unlike the Positivist
paradigm (which looks for "hard facts" and numbers), the Interpretive paradigm
seeks to understand the meanings that people attach to their lives.
• Ontology (Nature of Reality): In this paradigm, reality is not single or fixed. It
is multiple and socially constructed. This means every learner has their
own "truth" about why they feel alienated.
• Epistemology (Nature of Knowledge): Knowledge is gained through
subjective engagement. The researcher cannot remain "detached"; they
must interact with the participants to co-create understanding.
3. Research Methodology: How to Collect Data
To understand the "why" behind student alienation, an activist researcher would use
qualitative methods:

• Semi-Structured Interviews: These allow students to tell their stories in their
own words. Instead of "Yes/No" questions, we ask, "Tell me about a time you
felt your culture was ignored in class."
• Participant Observation: Spending time in the classroom to observe the
social context and power dynamics between teachers and students.
• Thematic Analysis: Identifying recurring "themes" in the students' stories,
such as a lack of representation in textbooks or language barriers.
4. The Role of Context
In Assignment 2, you must emphasize that this research is context-bound.
• Example: Learner alienation in a wealthy private school might be caused by
high-pressure expectations.
• Contrast: In a rural, under-resourced school, alienation might be caused by
the distance between the Western-centric curriculum and the students' daily
lives.

Section A: Quick Tips for the Short Answers
• Define "Social Context": It is the web of relationships and cultural norms
that define a community.
• Validity vs. Trustworthiness: In qualitative (Interpretive) research, we don't
use "validity" (a math term); we use trustworthiness, which is achieved
through being honest about our biases and spending long periods with the
participants.
Submission Checklist
1. Student Declaration: This is mandatory for every assignment.
2. Turnitin: UNISA usually allows you to submit your draft to Turnitin first. Aim
for a similarity score below 15%.
3. Referencing: Ensure you cite Smith (2021) and Learning Unit 2
