Assignment two: National Initiatives
In this assignment I will be writing about how the national initiatives promote anti-
discriminatory practices. I will be explaining the different national initiatives and how they
promote anti discriminatory practice. Another thing that I will be writing about in this essay
is accessing a recent national initiative policy which promotes anti discriminatory practices.
A national initiative by definition is explores discriminatory practice and its potential effects
on patients or other words service users, the promotion of anti-discriminatory practice is
practiced by the use of legislation. In this essay I will explain the different discriminatory
practises with examples regarding the health and social care setting.
Discriminatory practice is the act that someone is discriminating against another regarding
their age, culture, race, disability, sexual orientation, or anything else someone believes
they can discriminate against.
P4: Explain how national initiatives have influenced anti discriminatory practice in health
and social care settings.
A national initiative that I will be writing about is the Mental Health 1983.This act allows for
actions to be taken place when things are necessary meaning that it helps people who are
deemed to need mental health treatment due to a learning difficulty and people who have a
mental health issue. This act also allows for the safety of other people who are surrounded
a particular person. Within this act, section 12, a member of family of someone who is
suffering with their mental health has the right to detain someone on the basis of believing
they are a danger to themselves or another person. This act promotes anti discriminatory
practice by making sure that someone isn’t discriminated against due to mental illness
within a setting this also allows for everyone to be accepted regardless of their condition.
Another way that the mental health act promotes anti discriminatory practice is by giving
patients of mental health services mutual respect and treating them with the same dignity
and respect someone would treat a person with a physical illness. This act is important
because it allows for people to be assessed to enable the service to see what level of
treatment that individual needs to help them. Within this act it says that someone can be
sectioned without their permission if the professional or a loved one has a concern about
their wellbeing. This act may not be followed or used because the NHS is underfunded

which means that they can’t give the care that the professionals may wish to give due to
lack of resources and money to do that. Another reason that this act may not be followed is
because if someone is sectioned this may not be best idea for that individual as well as the
easiest because of their situation. This act may nit we followed because the mental health
services such as CaMHs and AaMHs have long waiting lists for patients to get help from
them. This act is only put into place and is being reacted to once an incident has happened
rather than preventing an incident. An example of when this act is used is when a young
teenage girl who has just finished secondary school, she suffers with anxiety and depression
and often says she wants to commit suic0ide while self-harming. This act has failed this
young girl as she hasn’t been sectioned even though she is saying she wants to harm herself,
for her safety. As well as she due to her age she being left for a few months until she turns
17, which means she will be going into the AaMHs as CaMHs have said that they can’t treat
her anymore.
The disability discrimination act 1995, this act helps to protect people with disabilities this is
by ensuring that the civil rights and protection for someone who has a disability. This act
protects people who are suffering with a lifelong condition. It also helps to try to eliminate
harassment against people who have a disability. This act also helps to encourage positive
attitudes towards disabled people. This act promotes anti discriminatory practice by
allowing disabled people the right to have employment, access to facilities, education as
well as buying or renting a property. With this act it means that disabled people have the
same rights as any other person. An example of this act is in a school where they have a
child who needs a rail within the toilet facilities so that they can use the toilet much easier.

school was discriminated against by not being able to take part in his several children
activities such as making items for the scenery of the Christmas nativity set as well as cake

for the disabled person to be able to asse0s many transport types as well as motor to be
able to travel around. This act may not be f0ollowed because this act isn’t as commonly
known as an act so many people don’t understand what the act is all about and what part of
